Situated in the far northeast section of The Lands Between, this frozen domain holds essential boss fights, high-tier crafting items, and crucial narrative progression. Reaching this area requires fulfilling specific story prerequisites and traveling through dedicated transition zones.
Where the Mountaintops of the Giants Is Located
Geographically, the Mountaintops of the Giants sits at the far northern reach of the world map, directly beyond the capital city of Leyndell. It is split into distinct sub-regions, including eastern and western sections as well as hidden optional areas. The snow-covered landscape features extreme terrain, steep cliffs, and ancient ruins guarded by formidable enemies.
Because the region is sealed off during the early and mid-game, players cannot simply ride directly into the snowland. Gaining access requires conquering major challenges inside the capital first. Once unlocked, it serves as the backdrop for several major campaign milestones.
Prerequisites for Accessing the Frozen Realm
Before attempting to travel to the snowy peaks, players must advance the main storyline through Leyndell, Royal Capital. The primary requirement is defeating Morgott, the Omen King, who guards the path toward the Erdtree. Defeating him grants access to essential dialogue and progression items.
After the battle, resting at the nearby Site of Grace triggers a conversation with Melina. She provides the Rold Medallion, an essential key needed to operate the lift leading out of the capital area. Without this medallion, the pathway forward remains permanently locked.
Navigating Through the Forbidden Lands
With the key in hand, players must exit the main street of Leyndell through the large eastern gate. Following the elevated path leads straight into the Forbidden Lands, a narrow and mist-shrouded valley serving as a buffer zone. This linear stretch presents hostile creatures and tough mini-bosses along the road.
Traversing the Forbidden Lands brings travelers directly to the grand entrance of the elevator complex. At the end of the road stands a massive staircase heavily guarded by dangerous foes. Defeating or bypassing these guards opens the way to the central lift chamber.
Operating the Grand Lift of Rold
The final step to reaching the region is stepping onto the Grand Lift of Rold. Standing on the activation pedestal gives players the prompt to hoist the Rold Medallion. A cutscene will trigger, carrying your character upward into the snowy mountain pass.
Arriving at the top immediately places you at the entrance of the Mountaintops of the Giants, near the Zamor Ruins. From here, players can explore the expansive snowy wastes, collect regional map fragments, and pursue the Flame of the Giants to continue their journey.
